Environmental and Social Impact Assessment

The Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) conducted by Rio Tinto SimFer is designed to evaluate the impacts the Simandou project may have on the environment and society. The ESIA outlines the steps we are taking to maximise the benefits of the Simandou project for local populations and to minimise any potential direct and indirect adverse impacts. These assessments have been fully approved by the Government of Guinea.

The ESIA covers the Ouéléba mine and associated infrastructure, in addition to the Rail Spur and associated supporting infrastructure. This assessment does not cover the proposed railway and port, which are subject to separate environmental and social impact assessments.

Wherever Rio Tinto operates, we put in place measures to avoid, minimise, restore and offset any potential impacts on the environment or local communities. This approach informs every decision we make.

We are privileged to have the opportunity to contribute to the future of this inspiring country by bringing to life a unique, transformative and historic project. We are grateful to the Government of Guinea for its continued partnership and collaboration.
